Duramax VIN & Engine Code Decoder: Every 6.6L by Year (LB7–L5P)
Decode your Duramax from the VIN. The 8th-digit engine code for every 6.6L generation — LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, LGH, L5P — plus the 10th-digit model-year chart and the RPO sticker, so you order parts for the engine you actually own.

There are two ways to buy Duramax parts. One is to type “6.6 Duramax” into a search box and hope. The other is to spend ninety seconds with your VIN, learn the exact engine code stamped into your truck, and then order parts that were built for that engine. This page is the second way. New parts are on Amazon Automotive by category; code-specific used and OEM parts are on the eBay Motors rail above.
The One Character That Matters
Your VIN is 17 characters. The eighth character is the engine code. On a GM HD truck that single character tells you which 6.6L Duramax is bolted into the frame — and the engine code, not the model year, is what determines whether an injector, turbo, or fuel pump will fit.
Here’s how the whole VIN breaks down:
| Position | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | World manufacturer identifier — 1GC for a US-built Chevrolet truck, 1GT for GMC |
| 4–7 | Body style, series, cab, and GVWR class |
| 8 | Engine code — this is the one you came for |
| 9 | Check digit (math, not information) |
| 10 | Model year |
| 11 | Assembly plant |
| 12–17 | Sequential build number |
Duramax Engine Codes by VIN Digit
Every 6.6L Duramax GM has built, indexed by the character in position eight:
| VIN code | Engine | Years | Platform | Emissions hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LB7 | 2001–2004 | GMT800 | None (pre-emissions) |
| 2 | LLY | 2004.5–2005 | GMT800 | EGR |
| D | LBZ | 2006–2007 (classic) | GMT800 | EGR, no DPF |
| 6 | LMM | 2007.5–2010 | GMT900 | EGR + DPF |
| 8 | LML | 2011–2016 | GMT900 → K2XX | EGR + DPF + SCR/DEF |
| L | LGH | 2011–2016 | Van / chassis-cab | Lower-output LML variant |
| Y | L5P | 2017–present | K2XX → T1XX | EGR + DPF + SCR/DEF |
All of them are a 6.6-liter V8 — roughly 403 cubic inches — and every one of them will happily accept the wrong parts order. The three lines that matter most for shopping:
- Injection pump: LB7 through LMM run the Bosch CP3. The LML and LGH run the CP4.2, which is the single biggest fuel-system risk on the platform. The L5P is listed with a Denso HP4 in our generations comparison and is not a confirmed CP4 truck — check the pump on the engine rather than assuming from the model year.
- Injectors: generation-specific, essentially without exception. The LB7’s live under the valve covers; later common-rail sets don’t. See the injector buyer’s guide before ordering anything from the injectors category.
- Emissions: DPF arrives with the LMM in 2007.5; DEF/SCR arrives with the LML in 2011. That changes what fits in exhaust and EGR & cooling more than any other single factor.
Model Year — the Tenth Character
Position ten is the model year, and it is not the same alphabet as position eight:
| Code | Year | Code | Year | Code | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2001 | 8 | 2008 | E | 2014 |
| 2 | 2002 | 9 | 2009 | F | 2015 |
| 3 | 2003 | A | 2010 | G | 2016 |
| 4 | 2004 | B | 2011 | H | 2017 |
| 5 | 2005 | C | 2012 | J | 2018 |
| 6 | 2006 | D | 2013 | K | 2019 |
| 7 | 2007 | — | — | L | 2020 |
…and it continues M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026. The letters I, O, Q, U, and Z are never used in a VIN, which is why the run skips them.
The collision trap. Three characters mean two entirely different things depending on which slot they sit in.
Dis an LBZ in position eight and a 2013 truck in position ten.Lis an LGH engine in eight and a 2020 truck in ten.8is an LML in eight and a 2008 truck in ten. Count carefully — this is the single most common way people misidentify their own engine.
Two Splits That Break Orders
2004.5 — the LB7 to LLY changeover. GM switched mid-model-year. A 2004 truck can be either engine, and they share almost nothing in the fuel system. Never order 2004 injectors by year alone; go by the VIN.
2007 — LBZ and LMM overlapped. GM sold the LBZ in the outgoing “classic” body and launched the LMM in the new GMT900 body in the same calendar year. Beyond the sheet metal, the LMM added a diesel particulate filter. Two trucks, same model year, different exhaust and emissions parts entirely. A D is an LBZ, a 6 is an LMM — the body style is a hint, the VIN is the answer. Our generations & fitment guide covers what that means for each part category.
LGH — the Code Most Decoders Miss
If your eighth digit is an L, you don’t have an LML — you have the LGH, the lower-output Duramax variant GM fitted to Express/Savana vans and chassis-cab applications during the LML years. It shares a great deal with the LML, but output, calibration, and some accessory hardware differ, and generic “2011–2016 Duramax” listings frequently don’t account for it. It’s worth searching the LGH code specifically, which is exactly what the LGH button on the eBay rail above does.
The RPO Sticker — What the VIN Won’t Tell You
The VIN gives you the engine. The Service Parts Identification label gives you the build. On most Silverado and Sierra HD trucks it’s inside the glove box; on some it’s on the center console lid or in the driver’s door area. It’s a dense block of three-character RPO codes describing how your truck left the factory.
Two things make it worth finding:
- It confirms the engine code in plain text — you’ll see
LB7,LBZ,LML,L5Pand so on printed as an option code, so you can double-check your VIN read. - It lists what the VIN omits. The most useful for parts shopping is the rear axle ratio —
GU6is 3.42,GT4is 3.73,GT5is 4.10 — which matters for gearing decisions, towing math, and any driveline work. Paint and trim codes are on there too, for anyone shopping body panels or interior parts.
From Code to Cart
Once you know your engine code, the shopping order writes itself:
- LB7 (1) — injectors are the known weak point, and a return-line refresh belongs in the same box. Start with the injector buyer’s guide.
- LLY (2) — heat management first: air intake and EGR & cooling work, per the EGR & cooling guide.
- LBZ (D) — the builder’s platform. Head studs before boost, then a tuner. See LBZ vs L5P if you’re still choosing a truck.
- LMM (6) — like the LBZ but with a DPF to respect; exhaust choices are constrained by it. Read the exhaust systems guide.
- LML / LGH (8 / L) — CP4 protection is the single smartest first purchase. Fuel system first, everything else second.
- L5P (Y) — the stoutest bottom end and the hardest ECM to touch. Airflow, filtration, and turbo support, per the turbo upgrades guide.
Whatever the code, the maintenance schedule and the common problems by generation breakdown will tell you what your specific engine wants next — and the glow plug guide is the right stop if it’s cold-start behavior that sent you looking up your VIN in the first place.
Print the code. Write it on the inside of the glove box. It’ll save you a return label every time you buy a part.
