If you own a Duramax, the injection pump bolted to the front of the engine is quietly one of the most consequential parts on the truck — and which one you have depends entirely on the year. The 2001–2010 trucks carry the Bosch CP3, a pump with a near-legendary reliability record. The LML and LGH (2011–2016) carry the Bosch CP4.2, a more modern, higher-pressure pump with one well-documented and expensive failure mode. Which Pump Does Your Truck Have?

It comes down to the model year and engine code:

  • CP3 — Bosch, 2001–2010. The LB7 (2001–2004), LLY (2004.5–2005), LBZ (2006–2007), and LMM (2007.5–2010) all run the CP3. It’s a high-volume, mechanically simple pump that tolerates fuel-quality problems far better than what replaced it, and it’s the reason those generations rarely make headlines for pump failures.
  • CP4.2 — Bosch, 2011–2016. The LML and the lower-output LGH run the CP4.2. It builds higher rail pressure and is more efficient — but it’s also the pump at the center of the Duramax fuel-system conversation.
  • L5P (2017+) — unresolved here, and we are not going to guess. Our generations comparison lists the L5P with a Denso HP4, not the Bosch CP4.2, and we could not confirm the L5P’s pump against any manufacturer source reachable to us on 24 August 2026. Treat every L5P pump claim — including ones you read elsewhere — as unconfirmed until you have checked the pump on your own engine.

If you’re not certain of your engine code, confirm it against the generations & fitment reference before buying anything. A CP3 and a CP4 are not interchangeable without a purpose-built kit.

Why the CP4 Failure Is Such a Big Deal

The CP3 earned its reputation honestly: it’s durable, it moves plenty of fuel, and when it does wear out it usually fails gracefully. The CP4.2 is a different story — not because it’s a bad pump on paper, but because of how it fails.

The CP4 uses the diesel passing through it as its own lubricant, riding a roller follower against an internal cam. US ultra-low-sulfur diesel is drier than the fuel the pump was designed around, and if that roller ever loses proper contact with the cam — from a dry-fuel moment, marginal fuel, or ordinary wear — the pump begins grinding metal. Those shavings don’t stay put. They circulate through the high-pressure side and contaminate the rails, the lines, and every one of the eight injectors.

That’s the part owners underestimate: a failed CP4 is rarely a single-part repair. It’s frequently a full fuel-system replacement, which is exactly why prevention is the smart money on an LML.

Option 1: CP3 Conversion

The most permanent fix for the CP4’s risk is to remove the CP4 entirely and install the older CP3. A CP3 conversion kit bundles the pump, an adapter to mate it to the engine, the correct lines, and the tuning needed to disable the CP4’s low-pressure protection. For a lot of LML owners this is the definitive answer — the CP3 flows more than enough for stock and moderate-power trucks, and it retires the failure mode for good.

Option 2: CP4 Disaster-Prevention (Bypass) Kit

If you’d rather keep the CP4, a disaster-prevention or bypass kit reroutes the pump’s internal return so that if it does begin to come apart, the metal debris is captured and dumped rather than pushed downstream into your injectors and rails. It doesn’t make the CP4 immortal — but it changes a catastrophic, whole-system failure into a far cheaper pump-only replacement. For a stock LML owner who doesn’t want the expense or emissions questions of a full conversion, it’s sensible insurance.

The Cheapest Protection: Fuel Filtration

Whichever pump you have, it lives or dies on fuel quality. This is the least glamorous and most effective thing you can do:

  • Change the fuel filter on schedule with a quality unit. The GM genuine TP1015 filter kit and a proven aftermarket unit like the Doc’s diesel filter are the routine service parts; the maintenance schedule lays out the intervals.
  • Keep the housing healthy. A cracked or leaking fuel filter housing assembly lets air and contaminants past the filter — replace it if it’s weeping.

If the CP4 Already Failed

Which Duramax engines have the CP3 and which have the CP4?
The 2001–2010 trucks — LB7, LLY, LBZ, and LMM — use the Bosch CP3 high-pressure injection pump. The 2011–2016 LML and LGH use the Bosch CP4.2, and that pair is what the CP4 conversation is about. Why does the Duramax CP4 pump fail and take out the whole fuel system?
The CP4.2 relies on the fuel itself to lubricate its internal roller-and-cam mechanism. US ultra-low-sulfur diesel has less lubricity than the fuel the pump was designed around, and a dry-fuel event or simple wear can let the roller follower lose contact with the cam. When that happens the pump grinds metal into the fuel and pushes those shavings downstream — contaminating the rails, lines, and all eight injectors. That's why a CP4 failure is rarely 'just a pump': it's often a full fuel-system replacement, which is exactly what makes prevention worth it.
Is a CP3 conversion worth it on an LML?
For many LML owners, yes — swapping the CP4.2 for the older, far more durable CP3 permanently removes the catastrophic-failure risk, and the CP3 flows plenty for stock and moderate-power builds. A conversion kit includes the CP3, an adapter, the lines, and tuning to disable the CP4's low-pressure protection. The alternative is a disaster-prevention (bypass) kit that keeps the CP4 but captures debris if it starts to fail. Either path beats waiting for the failure. How do I make either pump last?
Clean, lubricated fuel.
